Background of the Study
Household waste management is a critical component of urban sanitation and public health. In Kaduna State, rapid urbanization has led to increased generation of domestic waste, challenging existing waste disposal systems. Improper disposal practices such as open dumping and burning not only contribute to environmental degradation but also pose serious health risks, including the spread of infectious diseases and respiratory problems (Chinwe, 2023; Adebola & Lawal, 2024). Current practices in Kaduna vary significantly between urban and rural communities, with some areas benefiting from municipal services while others rely on informal methods. The absence of standardized waste management protocols and public awareness campaigns exacerbates the problem. Moreover, inadequate infrastructure and limited resources hinder effective waste collection and processing, leading to the proliferation of waste in residential areas. This study will assess current household waste disposal practices and explore their impact on environmental quality and public health. By combining field observations with household surveys and interviews with local authorities, the research will provide a comprehensive evaluation of waste management practices, identifying key challenges and opportunities for improvement (Umar, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
In Kaduna State, ineffective household waste disposal practices are contributing to significant environmental and public health issues. Many households resort to open dumping and burning of waste, which results in air and soil pollution. The lack of proper waste segregation and recycling further intensifies these problems. Residents in areas without regular municipal waste collection experience higher rates of vector-borne diseases and respiratory ailments due to exposure to decaying waste and smoke. Despite government initiatives aimed at improving waste management, there remains a disconnect between policy and practice, partly due to limited public participation and resource constraints. The consequences of poor waste management extend to economic, environmental, and social dimensions, necessitating a thorough evaluation of existing practices (Oluseyi, 2023). This study aims to fill the gap by systematically assessing household waste disposal methods, identifying barriers to effective waste management, and providing recommendations to enhance both environmental sustainability and public health in Kaduna State (Bello, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
• To assess current household waste disposal practices in Kaduna State.
• To determine the impact of these practices on environmental and public health.
• To recommend strategies for improving waste management systems at the household level.
Research Questions
• What are the prevalent household waste disposal practices in Kaduna State?
• How do these practices affect environmental quality and public health?
• Which measures can be implemented to improve waste disposal methods?
Research Hypotheses
• Poor household waste disposal practices are significantly associated with increased environmental pollution.
• Inadequate waste management practices contribute to a higher incidence of public health issues in affected communities.
• Community-based waste management initiatives will improve environmental outcomes and public health.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will target urban and peri-urban households in Kaduna State. Data will be gathered through surveys, interviews, and direct observations. Limitations include potential response biases and the challenge of quantifying informal waste disposal practices.
Definitions of Terms
